Turning down your thermostat a degree or two could help you save on your electric bill by conserving energy. When the difference between outside and inside temperature is significant, like today and tomorrow, your heating system runs more to maintain the warmth. That's why setting your thermostat at 68° during the winter (or even cooler, if safe) is generally a good rule of thumb. At lower settings, there is less difference between the outside temp and the desired indoor temperature, which reduces the run time that your system needs to keep the inside warm.
Additional tips include:
- Making sure your windows and doors are sealed with weather stripping and caulk;
- Making sure any holes for pipes or cables are filled in with foam insulation;
- In the extreme cold temps, keeping curtains drawn during the night and placing blankets over the doors will help keep any additional drafts from entering your home.
Stay safe, and keep your energy usage in check!
