As household appliances become more sophisticated, they have also become more sensitive to power surges. You probably know that power surges may be caused by lightning strikes. But did you know that trees, birds, and animals contacting power lines, poles broken by automobile accidents, and even faulty household appliances may also cause power surges?
Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative has extensive lightning protection built into its distribution system. This system prevents most power surges from destroying our equipment and from entering your home. But even with this protection, a voltage surge can reach your home or place of business through our lines or through your telephone lines and TV cable.
The second stage of HOEC's Home Surge Protection Program involves the additional use of secondary Surge Suppression Power Strips to protect your sensitive electronic equipment not protected by the meter base device. Surge protection is also available for your deep well pump. All surge suppression devices listed below are recommended and warranted for homes with the three wire system. Although these are the best surge protectors we have found, no company can guarantee that a surge suppressor device will completely protect your home from voltage surges. In the event of a surge causing damages, HOEC can only honor the manufacturer's parts and workmanship warranty. Surge protectors will not eliminate other power quality problems such as blinks or voltage problems.
The best protection for computers and other devices that need back-up power is the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). These units provide temporary protection against electrical outages in addition to providing surge suppression. With a UPS your computer remains powered for several minutes in the event of an outage, giving you time to shut the computer down properly and preventing the hard-drive corruption that can occur if a computer crashes due to sudden power loss.
The following UPS and surge suppression devices may be purchased from Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative. Sales Tax is included in prices of all products below; prices are subject to change without advance notice.
