Be Ready to Take Part During a PEAK Alert

Beat the Peak Alert - save energy, save money

During the cold days in winter and the hot days of summer, Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative (HOEC) encourages members to participate in any peak alerts that may occur.

What is the definition of a peak alert?
Peak alert means that the cooperative anticipates that HOEC member demand for electricity may be reaching a peak level. When a new peak demand is established, the energy supplier of HOEC will set a new level of power needed for HOEC members at any given time. The co-op in turn will pay for the new level of electricity at all times. The higher cost in power demand could mean a higher rate to members of the co-op. It doesn’t mean that the supply of electricity is being depleted.

To better understand what a peak demand means, consider an analogy to which many rural Missourians can relate. A cattle farmer needs a one ton dual wheeled pick-up truck and a fairly large stock trailer to haul cattle to the sale barn. The truck and trailer are only needed a few times of the year to haul a large load. Yet, the farmer still makes a loan payment to the bank every month whether he uses the truck and trailer to full capacity or not. The same is true for HOEC. The cooperative is responsible to pay for the maximum level of power cooperative members have used, at all times, even if the highest level is only needed a few days during the year.

In the winter months, peak usage usually occurs on extremely cold mornings, between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. On these days, the cooperative may issue a peak alert. If a peak alert is issued, a message will be aired on area radio stations, the cooperative Facebook page and here on the cooperative website. In addition, a mass email will be sent informing members who have registered on the cooperative website to alternate use of major appliances during the issued period.

The cooperative encourages all members to participate during a peak alert. If a large number of cooperative members take part, hundreds of thousands of cooperative members dollars may be saved.
